One of my favorite snacks is peanut butter crackers specifically the Austin brand! I buy them in bulk and always carry some with me when I travel.
One day, I decided to look at the ingredient list. Here are the ingredients for the toasty crackers with peanut butter.
ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], RIBOFLAVIN [VITAMIN B2], FOLIC ACID), PEANUT BUTTER (ROASTED PEANUTS), SOYBEAN OIL WITH TBHQ FOR FRESHNESS, SUGAR, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, DEXTROSE, CONTAINS TWO PERCENT OR LESS OF SALT, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE), SOY LECITHIN, CORNSTARCH, YELLOW #6, CHEDDAR CHEESE (PASTEURIZED MILK, CHEESE CULTURES, SALT, ENZYMES), WHEY, BUTTERMILK, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, RED PEPPER.
Needless to say, that was my last time eating the crackers. By the way, why is cheddar cheese an ingredient in peanut butter crackers?
I realized it was much healthier (and cheaper) to make my own.
With a little bit of almond butter, agave nectar and any whole wheat flat bread, you can create a great organic snack.
I also added some ground flax seeds, which has a large amount of omega-3, fiber and protein.
I make several of these a week for a great mid-day or post-workout snack. Try out this snack with your favorite nut butter (peanut, cashew, peanut etc) and organic crackers.
