Most people consider moving a four letter word. It’s time consuming, expensive and a general pain in the ass. Since I’ve been in Dallas, I’ve moved apartments 8 times. Now, some of that was in college, but the real reason I move so much is because I haven’t found that perfect place that meets all of my needs in my price range and I kind of like living in a new area of town every year. It’s pretty cool to discover an entirely new neighborhood. I’ve mostly lived downtown, uptown or in Deep Ellum and every area had its own cool vibe.
Over the years, I have become a pro at moving efficiently! Moving is some serious manual labor, even if you hire movers you still have to pack and unpack, lift boxes, shuttle little stuff that you don’t want to movers to move back and forth, etc. After all of that moving, who has the time or the energy to squeeze in a workout?
I moved to my new place yesterday and it was an ALL DAY event. I did manage to get a short run in before the movers arrived. I wanted to workout more but I didn’t have time. So I came up with some creative ways to turn my move into a workout.
Take the stairs
You don’t have to take the stairs every time, but try to take them every 3rd trip. This will help you get in a little cardio while your carry boxes.
Use your abs
When you lift things or are moving things from a box to a cabinet, engage your abs. All of the bending, twisting and reaching makes for a great ab workout.
When you’re lifting a lighter box off of the ground, do a few squats with the box in your hands. The box acts as a weight!
General Moving Tips:
Here are a few more tips to help your move run smoothly.
Don’t move dirty clothes
There is nothing worse than finishing a move and having no clean clothes or towels. Do laundry before you move to save yourself a giant headache later.
Throw crap in boxes
That’s my packing philosophy. I don’t really see the point in organizing everything before I put it in the box because its probably not going to be in the same spot in my new place. I generally pack things according to room and I try to list everything that’s in the box so I can easily find something if I need it right away.
Move clothes on the hangers
I usually gather a handful of clothes on hangers and wrap a rubber band around the hangers and put them in a trash bag. I know the trash bag is a little janky but wardrobe boxes are unnecessarily expensive. Moving clothes like this is a real time saver. When you get to your new place all you have to do is rip open the bag and hang your clothes. Boom, done.
Don’t look like a bum
Just because you’re moving, doesn’t mean you have to look busted! Wear comfortable workout clothes but add a pop of color with a brightly colored tank.
I moved yesterday and it was a LOONNG day but after 6 hours it was done. This is what my place looks like right now!
Check out the view from my balcony on the 19th floor. Nice huh?!
