A perfect red lip adds a nice pop of color to almost any ensemble. But sometimes when you apply your lip color, it doesn’t turn out as flawless as you’d like. Especially, if it’s a darker shade. Here are 5 simple tips to ensure your red lip is flawless every time!
Yup, if you have dry lips like me, you MUST exfoliate your lips shortly before applying your lip color. You can use a fancy exfoliating scrub or DIY, but if you don’t have time or money for that plain ol’ sugar will do. Put a half teaspoon of sugar in your palm, add a few drops of water, then gently exfoliate your lips in a circular motion. Be sure of focus on your driest parts where your lip stick tends to glop or crease.
Next, be sure to follow up with some moisture. Apply some lip balm or coconut oil to your lips and wait a few minutes for it to penetrate.
3. Lip liner
I don’t care what anyone says, lip liner is a must to ensure you get nice sharp lines and your lipstick doesn’t feather throughout the day. I usually use a red lip liner from NYX, but if you don’t have one handy, you can use your lip stick and a super fine lip liner brush.
4. High quality, matte lip stick
Choosing the perfect shade of red for your skin tone and hair color is not the time to skimp. Go to a makeup counter where you can try on multiple shades until you find your perfect match. There’s nothing worse than seeing a girl with the wrong shade of red. #IJS
I prefer matte lip stick. It tends to stay on longer and get less gloppy throughout the day. My go to shades are Diva and Russian Red by Mac.
5. Touch Up
Lip stick isn’t a one and done thing. You have to reapply throughout your day. I usually do a mid day touch up where I re-exfolitate and moisturize my lips and reapply my liner and lip stick.
I hope these tips help you perfect your red lip!
