Sporty Spotlight – Kenda Elise Fields

It’s that again! I have selected a new Sporty Spotlight to share with you all. In the last year, I have watched her change dramatically.

Today’s Sporty Spotlight is on Kenda Fields. She has dropped over 40 pounds, completed her first half marathon and even finished the 10 day juicing fast after watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Kenda is a great example of what you can achieve with a little bit of love, fitness and determination.

In your own words, describe your occupation (student, entrepreneur, clerk by day singer by night?)

I am a mommy, self-employed freelance writer, student, and life and fitness blogger!

Tell us a little bit about your hair. How do you wear your hair? (Natural and curly, natural and straight, transitioning, permed, wigs, weaves, etc.)   What are some of your signature hair styles?

I transitioned for about 2 ½ years before I big chopped my  hair July 23, 2011. The reason behind the BC was very emotional for me , but I am so glad I did it! My signature look is a twist-out. I am in a weird “ugly” phase where I am a TWA but not really because my sides are long, I haven’t really experimented with my hair much besides a faux-hawk! [Hair Story on Curl Rehab]

How do you maintain your hair on weekly basis?

I wash my hair weekly with Kinky Curly Come  Clean , deep condition every Friday night with either Crème of Nature Argan Oil Conditioner, O Thing’s O Natural Natty Moist (smells like Christmas), or Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Masque,  and co-wash on Wednesdays with Herbal Essence Hello Hydration. I sleep on a satin pillow case because it doesn’t smooth my curls! I do a bonnet only if my hair is still damp after twisting!

What are some of your hair favorite products?

My favorite products are anything by O Things O Natural (all natural products that smell yummy), essential oils  (Olive Oil, Peppermint Oil, Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil)  and Sporty Afros G+ Moisturizing Spray. I’m a believer!!

What are your tips for keeping hair healthy to those that workout consistently?

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!! There is nothing more important (at least for me).  If your hair is moisturized it will look, feel, and in most cases smell good!! Healthy hair is good hair and moisturizing is key! The G+ spray has really helped with achieving consistent moisture. I used a mixture of water and essential oils prior to discovering the spray which worked pretty good, but the G+ spray works 10X better. It’s like my secret curl activator after and before my runs and workouts!

What are some of your favorite healthy foods?

I love good fat! I know that sounds weird but I am a lover of higher calorie protein sources like peanut butter and avocados. I’d rather use my calories on things that are good for  me, than on things that won’t leave me satisfied. I love juicing! The benefits are amazing and I am able to get essential nutrients into my system fast.  My favorite breakfast is Cinnamon Raisin Ezekial Bread or Whole Wheat waffles with peanut butter and a banana or apple. For lunch I am a fan of sandwiches and wraps with alfalfa sprouts. And I am a pescetarian (no meat just fish) so I most times will opt for a baked filet, brown rice, and fresh lightly sautéed vegetables.

What are your tips to our readers on staying in shape?

It sounds cliché but you have to schedule and plan out your workouts. Saying “I’m gonna workout today” is great, but saying “I’m going to workout on my lunch break at the employee gym for 30 minutes”  is better because you have a plan of where ,when and how long, like a schedule.  Also don’t think that you can eat whatever you want, exercise and you’ll see changes. You have to pay attention to what you are eating and how much. My favorite online community is MyFitnessPal. When I joined it showed me just how much I really was eating and allowed me to make better choices and hold myself accountable for what went into my body. Add me: LGIFitness2K11

Last thing, when buying food remember the less ingredients the better! The closest you can get to the real thing, the better it will be for you!

What’s on your workout playlist?

On my playlist I have Detrick Haddon, Fred Hammond, Donald Lawrence, Kiki Sheard, Mary Mary, Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground, Ke$ha, Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Outkast and Wacka Flocka Flame. (Don’t judge me! The gangsta anger keeps me pumped)

Favorite female athlete?

Lailah Ali hands down! She is driven, determined, professional, sexy, beautiful, and smart! Everything that I have potential to be all in one!!

Tip(s) on staying healthy?

Consistency is key. If you have a obstacle in your way don’t give up! Keep pushing, mix up your workouts and/or eating habits and you will see results! I was in a plateau for 3-months and it wasn’t until I got serious about clean eating, consistent runs and cross training that I pulled out of it. Regroup!!

How did you start working out consistently? What was your motivation? What has your progress been like?

I started working out consistently in September 2010. I got a plan from the coach at my employee gym after a couple of false starts and got to work!! My motivation was to be a great example for my daughter ( who two years later is very active and would rather throw a football around outside then  watch TV), get my pre-baby confidence and body back, and to stop wearing maternity clothes. My progress has been great, though I gained some weight back. My original goal was  to lose 70 lbs, I lost 44 lbs last year and then gained 20 of those pounds back because of some mental obstacles. I have about 30 pounds to go. Through all the trials I’ve been through with my weight loss I know now the tools I need in order to succeed! I want to help people with the things I’ve been through and make sure that we all come out on top. HEALTHY!!

Top 3 favorite things about yourself?
