Make Sure March Celebrations Include Healthy Choices

Whether you’re celebrating your birthday or March Madness, this month can easily be filled with excuses to overindulge. If you are on your weight-loss journey or still sticking to your New Year’s resolution of becoming healthier, overindulging can seriously hinder all of your recent hard work.

Below are a few alternatives to some common junk foods, snacks and drinks that will allow you to have fun with your friends but not want to kick yourself the next day.

Unhealthy food: Pepperoni pizza

Healthy alternative: Thin crust pizza with veggies

If you want to make a homemade pizza use the following ingredients: thin, whole wheat crust, organic tomato sauce, skim-milk mozzarella and top it off with fresh basil and sliced tomatoes. You can also add a low-fat, organic meat or cube a Quorn Naked Chik’n Cutlet for those who are vegetarian.

Unhealthy food: Buffalo wings

Healthy alternative: Boneless, grilled chicken strips with a side of buffalo sauce. Cut the chicken into small pieces or strips and dip them into the sauce. These are really good! I actually prefer them over traditional wings. If you happen to find yourself Buffalo Wild Wings during March Madness try the naked tenders.

Unhealthy food: Sweets (cake, cookies, ice cream, etc.)

Healthy alternative: Fresh Fruit

A bowl of mixed berries with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries will satisfy that sweet tooth without the unnecessary calories or fat. Fruit is naturally sugary so it’s a great sweet treat and you can eat as much as you want!

Unhealthy food: Potato chips and dip

Healthy Alternative: Organic blue corn tortilla chips or baked chips with mango salsa or homemade guacamole. Another super healthy alternative is kale chips, they are super easy to make and packed with nutrients. Check out SportyAfros.com for a link to the recipe.

Cocktails and Drinks

During special occasions, most people drink…a lot. Don’t forget that alcoholic drinks are packed with empty calories that add to your waist line and don’t fill you up. Below are a few low calorie drink alternatives that will help you keep the party going without popping the button on your new jeans.

Vodka and Diet Soda
A shot of vodka is about 60 calories, combine that with your favorite diet soda and you’re looking at a drink under 100 calories.

Classic Martini
They are mostly vodka anyway so you’re entire drink will be right around 100 calories.

Gin and Tonic
This classic drink is about 103 calories.

Wine
A 4 oz glass of red or white wine will only set you back about  80 calories.

Sporty Afros’ Skinny Fizzy Margarita

This simple drink is Alex’s personal recipe which consists of 1.5 oz. tequila, 1 raspberry Emergen-C packet (you can use crystal light or flavored sparking water instead), 5 oz. water, 1 oz. lime juice. Throw in some frozen fruit to pretty up the glass and keep your drink cold instead of ice. It will only set you back 130 calories!

Monisha‘s Sporty Cupcakes

If you attended our February Fabulousness event, you know these cupcakes rock! Here is the entire recipe but you can change the icing to make them look like little basketballs (as indicated in the above photo). Cute huh?!!

Hopefully with these tips you will be able to avoid adding inches to your waistline during your March celebrations!
