Did you know that your skin absorbs 60% of what you put on it? If you’re using chemical- filled products every day think about the long term health implications that could have. I’m just sayin…
In 2013, I want to start replacing my regular beauty/body products with all natural ones. I decided to start slow so I can get used to each product and find out what I like or don’t like. In the past, I made 2 attempts at natural skin care which failed miserably. You can read about attempt #1 and attempt #2. In spite of my bad experiences, I decided to give natural beauty/body products another go.
I’ve decided to try natural deodorant, natural body wash and grape seed oil in place of lotion.
I purchased all of these items from Natural Grocer. I freakin LOVE that place ! I’ve been using each of these products for about a week.
Here is my feedback:
Grape seed oil
Here are just a few benefits of using grape seed oil on your skin. It’s:
- Rich in antioxidants
- Anti inflammatory
- 50 times richer in antioxidants than vitamin E
- Rich in fatty acids
- Has natural astringent properties
- Has anti aging properties
* Tip* Buy your grape seed oil in the cooking section as opposed to the beauty section.
It’s a lot cheaper. I only paid $7 for the big bottle pictured above and I’ve seen it even cheaper than that at Whole Foods. In the beauty section, you’ll pay $16 for 8 oz of the same exact oil! If you look on the back of the beauty section bottle, most of them say the oil is “cooking grade”. Translation= it’s the same dang thing you get in the cooking section they are just charging you twice as much. Boo.
Be sure its 100% expeller pressed grape seed oil. Expeller pressed grape seed oil is produced by crushing grape seeds, extracting the oil without using toxic chemicals.
I love grape seed oil because it moisturizes really well without leaving a greasy residue. It also absorbs into your skin quickly too so it wont get all over your clothes. The winter weather made my skin super dry so I’ve been using this on my face and my body for about 2 weeks. I really like using it on my body, but after a few days I noticed that the skin my my legs wasn’t absorbing it for some reason. After I applied it, my skin would still be extremely dry! Then, I tried combining it with some aloe vera gel but that didn’t seem to work either. The rest of the skin on my body loves it! Just not my legs. So, I’ll have to abandon using pure grape seed oil as a moisturizer. Next, I’m going to try to make my own lotion with grape seed oil (of course) to see my skin likes that better. It’s all about making adjustments to find exactly what works for you. I’ll do a post about it next week.
Did you know that your regular deodorant has toxic chemicals and heavy metals in it? For real! Look it up. The most common are:
Triclosan – classified as a pesticide by the FDA and used in deodorants to kill bacteria that causes body odor
Parabens – which have been linked to cancer
Aluminum compounds – particularly aluminum chlorohydrate - linked with higher risks of Alzheimer’s
Yikes! I decided to opt for a natural deodorant, which can be a little tricky because some don’t work too well and you end up smelling like a funky mess. I decided to try Jason brand and its been fantastic. My body has gotten used to it fast so I’m going to stick with this brand. It’s really affordable! Only $5!
Natural Body Wash
Have you read the ingredient list on the back of your regular body wash? Can you pronounce any of them? Neither can I. I decided to opt for something all natural. I used 100% African soap a while back, but I don’t really like keeping a bar of soap in the shower. It’s a little icky to me. So I opted for the next best thing – African soap body wash. It works great and it was affordable too, $6!
Throughout the rest of the year, I’ll be incorporating more natural products into my beauty regimen. Maybe I’ll give natural skin care another try, but I’ll think I’ll wait until after the wedding for that one…
