Swimming with Natural Hair

Summer is upon us and you know what that means –  time to hit the water. Don’t let the fear of dealing with the matted afro puff that will be on your head if you decide to get it wet. Here are a few simple tips to save you from a hair disaster if you decide to go swimming with natural hair.

 

4 Tips to Protect Your Natural Hair When Swimming  pool swim

 

Tip #1: Before hitting the pool, make sure you prep hair with conditioner and or oils. You can check out our youtubevideo on how we like to prepare our hair before swimming.

Tip #2: If you’re hitting the water for fun, try braiding your hair or putting it in a secure undo. This will dramatically decrease matting.

If you’re working out in the pool, protect the hair with a swim cap. There are a variety of swim caps to choose from. Check out out blog post about various types of swim caps.

Tip #3: After swimming, make sure to cleanse hair with a clarifying shampoo. Don’t know which one to choose? Check out Alex’s  top picks.

Tip #4: After cleansing your hair, follow up with a deep conditioner. Pick a few of your favorites and stick with them. This one step is critical to replenishing moisture. Here are some of my favorite deep conditioners.
