Alex's Summer Workout Essentials

Summer is here and it’s time to switch up the normal hair and fitness routine. I am the crazy person who loves working out in the heat. I thrive in it!

Whitney and Monisha have already posted their summer workout essentials. If you missed their lists, click on the links below.

I figured I would share my list since it is a little bit different than the other ladies.

Alex’s Summer Workout Essentials

Great Support!

Since I am now training for my 2nd half marathon, the Ladies (aka girls aka boobs) must be strapped down and under control. A few good, high impact bras are a must if you are running, cross training or involved in any high impact sport.  I am slightly obsessed with the underarmour because of the quality and longevity but I keep my options open.

I shop around for all my workout gear especially at TJ Maxx and online. 6pm is my new favorite site.  I purchased 2 Nike Victory Bras for over half the retail price! I am also a new lover of the Nike Victory Bras.

Great Hair

If you have to run 10 miles in the hot sun, do so while looking good. No matter if it’s a 10 or 20 mile race, make sure your hair is looking fly and not dry. I make sure to keep my hair moisturized, which is why I created Sporty Afros G+ Moisturizing Spray. Right before and after a race, you will catch me spraying it. It’s a must!

A Belt

Thanks to Monisha, I purchased my first Fuel belt for a steal on groupon. I have the Fuel Belt R20 Hydration waist belt in grey. It comes with 2 bottles and is light weight. I keep an id, cash, and my keys in the small pouch. I like to run with one frozen bottle of water and the other one one filled with ice and Nuun. Nuun is my personal choice for hydration. Fruit punch is my favorite flavor.

Smooth Skin

For the past 3 years, I have used natural body oils instead of lotions. It took some time for my skin to adjust but overall I am pleased with the change. One of my “Must haves” after a long swim or shower is Beautiful Brown Baby Dol’s Iskoe oil. Not only does it smell wonderful, but your body is left smooth and silky. It absorbs quickly into your skin. Her oil has been a staple item for the past 6 months.

2-For-1 Products

As always, you must keep your  gym bag stocked with the essentials. Instead of having body wash, shampoo and multiple products in my bag, I try to streamline my products by purchasing items that I can use for multiple needs.

For example, I use this Gold’s powder to keep the sweat and odor away from various parts of my body and clothes instead of a body spray/mist.  I love amazing botanicals black soap shampoo but I often will use it as a body wash too! As always, I use our Sporty Afros G+ Spray as a quick moisturizer and curl refresher. I use the Sporty Afros Ayurvedic oil  to add shine to my hair. Sometimes I use it as a hot oil treatment as well as an emergency body oil.  I will discuss my summer must have hair products in a later post.

2 Pairs of Fly Kicks

I am avid about having cross training shoes and running shoes. For turbo fit classes, personal training session and lifting weights, I use cross training shoes. For running, obviously I use my running shoes. In the long run, my running shoes last a lot longer thus saving me more money.  🙂

I am slightly obsessed with running in a cap. After noticing I was not matching in my half marathon photos, I finally broke down and bought another one. My new running cap is a great find and perfect for the summer time. The Underarmour Code Black running cap is smooth, reflects the sun, cute and fits all of my thick hair. It also has a built-in sweatband, which uses UA’s signature Moisture Transport System to wick off sweat fast.

Luscious Lips

Okay, if anyone knows me, I use and love the Neutrogena line. I tried the Neutrogena lip balm on just a hunch and I loved it. It’s sheer but gives your lips a soft smooth kissable look. It’s also has SPF 20 and moisturizes your lipst oo! I paid $3.00 for it at CVS and wear this daily. I purchased the petal glow shade because my lips are naturally pink and don’t need much of anything. They have 6 shades to choose from.

Cute Outfit

No matter how much sweat I have on me, I must look good while burning those calories. In my college tee, Triathlon watch, Funky crazy hair, 4 year-old underamour tights (Yes, they are still going strong!) and my new Nike kicks, you can’t tell me I am not cute, comfortable and ready to kick butt. Don’t my new shoes add a bit of cuteness to my outfit without overdoing it?

Slogan Tees

Although you may not be able to say what’s on your mind, let your t-shirt say it for you. Check out our new Sporty Afros Shirts. Cute enough to workout in and wear outside the gym. Wearing a cute slogan t-shirt is a great way to strike up a conversation with a cute guy or meet a new fitness buddy!

A Fit Crew

Truly, having friends who support, pray and love you is one of my biggest fitness must haves. (I have more friends but I just wanted to point a few out since you guys know Moe and Whitney)

Being around my “fit” friends is amazing. They really inspire me the more I talk to them. For example, I was never a juicer until Whitney started juicing. I hated running until I met Monisha and now I slightly enjoy it. LOL

Because of them, they make me want to be better completely. They inspire me, have my back when I am not “myself” and always look out for me. After each race and event, I look forward to a glass of wine or pancakes with them as we laugh through our soreness and lack of sleep.

… BTW: If you don’t have any “fit” friends, Sporty Afros is your fit crew! 🙂

    Hi ladies –
I’m loving this site. I have been working hard to help my 15 yr. old foster daughter find cute hair options w/o perming. Today we are doing braids so she can stay active and not have to worry about a weave and pressed hair every time she’s at the beach or in the pool. This is such a big deal and you are right on target working to keep women active and not letting hair get in the way.
I’m a high school basketball coach and a lot of my girls are messing around with their perms and weaves during the season. I can now direct them to this site for more info and suggestions.
    Thank you so much!!
